In superb condition, this English Walter Mayson violin from 1885 has a nice bright, open, sound which projects really well. Mason instruments are all highly individual, often given names by the maker, “Abydos” in this case, the violin has unique fluted edgework similar to that of the later Cremonese ‘Monteverde’ school. Fine workmanship with a nice warm brown original varnish complete this package.

Walter Mayson was a prolific and confident maker, completing more than 800 instruments generally modelled on the great Italian Masters, individual touches giving each a unique character. He initially worked in Manchester where, as a young man he would have been aware of other masters in that city such as George Craske and Edward J’anson. He spent time in Windermere and in London before returning to his home city.

Fitted-up to our ‘Master’ standard with Evah Pirazzi strings, this charming violin is a bargain and would be ideal for the dedicated amateur.
